Want to know how AR is reshaping healthcare?
Say goodbye to those flat, outdated 2D X-rays. Surgeons at UC Davis Health are stepping into the future with augmented reality goggles that bring 3D precision right into the operating room. Thanks to the MXR Research Group, they’re using AR overlays to map, plan, and perform surgeries like never before.
And it’s not just the surgeons getting the edge—patients are seeing their procedures come to life with real-time visualizations, making complex surgeries easier to understand.

Take a look at the future of surgery at UC Davis Health, where augmented reality goggles are setting a new standard in the operating room. Instead of looking at flat 2 dimensional X-rays, surgeons are now able to see beyond those traditional images for a new enhanced precision in their surgical procedures. This is really exciting stuff.
Surgeons in the Otolaryngology, Neurological Surgery and Orthopedic Surgery departments have created the UC Davis Medical Extended Reality (MXR) Research Group. It’s part of the 3D Printing and Visualization Lab at UC Davis Health. They’re the first to use extended reality during surgery within UC Davis Health.
Collaborating with Xironetic and other companies, MXR is the first to apply augmented reality overlays during complex surgeries. Surgeons equipped with AR goggles can now visualize 3D CT and MRI scans overlaid onto their field of view—planning, projecting, and perfecting surgeries in ways never before possible.
Now, this technology isn’t just revolutionizing procedures, but also transforming patient education. One patient’s pre-surgery experience to fix an orbital fracture is a testament to how extended reality can quickly provide a clear visual understanding of complex medical scenarios.
As the field of surgery evolves, we’re excited to see how UC Davis Health continues to push boundaries, integrating augmented reality into education and practice. This is just the beginning. Extended reality at UC Davis Health is not only changing how professionals learn and perform surgeries, but it’s also redefining patient care for the future.
